About the BAM
The Merlin Music Systems BAM (Bass Augmentation Module) is an outboard line-level equalizer module that provides a targeted bass boost of about 5.2dB at 35Hz and applies a subsonic roll-off below 27Hz to prevent distortion from inaudible infrasonic frequencies. It is designed to extend the flat frequency response of Merlin loudspeakers down into the low 30Hz range, enhancing bass depth and tunefulness without muddying the midrange. The BAM can be placed between the source and preamplifier, between preamplifier and power amplifier, or in a tape loop, offering flexible integration into audio systems. It features a separate outboard power supply with an optional rechargeable battery, allowing operation on AC power or battery for improved signal purity and isolation. The BAM uses high-quality components including Caddock resistors, Cardas wiring and jacks, and Hovland capacitors, with a Master BAM version upgrading to Deuland capacitors for even lower noise and greater dynamic impact. It is available in single-ended (RCA) and balanced (XLR) versions, with a dual-ops model supporting both. The unit measures approximately 6.7" W x 8.7" D x 2.5" H and weighs about 5 lbs. It has an input impedance of around 40k ohms and output impedance of 100 ohms, THD of 0.005%, and maximum output voltage of 9.5V RMS. The BAM is included with Merlin VSM Millennium and other models, and is highly regarded for its ability to deliver clean, controlled, and extended bass without adding distortion or coloration.
