The McIntosh MCD550 SACD/CD player offers state-of-the-art audio reproduction with support for SACD, CD, MP3, and WMA formats. It features a unique twin laser pickup system that reads both CD and SACD discs using two laser elements with different wavelengths. The advanced transport uses a premium aluminum die-cast tray and reads discs at twice the normal rate, storing data in a buffer memory for improved error correction and tracking, ensuring smooth and accurate playback. The player incorporates an 8-channel, 32-bit/192kHz digital-to-analog converter (DAC) operating in Quad Balanced mode, which uses four DAC channels per audio channel to deliver wide dynamic range and extremely low distortion. It supports PCM signals from CDs and digital inputs, as well as DSD signals from SACDs. The MCD550 includes multiple digital inputs (USB, coaxial, optical) supporting up to 24-bit/192kHz streaming, and offers both fixed and variable balanced and unbalanced outputs, allowing direct connection to power amplifiers or preamps. The front panel features classic McIntosh design elements such as a black glass faceplate, illuminated logo, rotary knobs, and a stainless steel chassis. Additional features include a linear power supply with a special R-Core transformer, a high-drive headphone amplifier with adjustable volume control, and a multi-function display showing playback and input status. The player weighs 12.7 kg and measures 17.5" x 6" x 19" (W x H x D). It has received accolades such as the 2015 Product of the Year by HiFi Review magazine for its realistic soundstage and precision.
