About the Ariadne
The Maplenoll Ariadne is a United Kingdom-built belt-drive turntable that represents a unique approach to high-end vinyl playback through its innovative air-bearing technology. The turntable features an air-levitated platter and air-bearing tonearm, where filtered, cooled, and smoothed air is supplied to raise the steel platter approximately 0.2mm from its base plate, allowing it to spin with virtually no friction. The air-bearing tonearm uses a carbon fiber rod that slides within a machined aluminum manifold with vanishingly small clearance, delivering extreme rigidity while remaining virtually frictionless. The tonearm tracks the record at a true tangent across its entire compass, eliminating inner groove distortion. The turntable includes a damping trough filled with machine oil that can be swung across the record to dampen vibrations from the cartridge. Sonically, the Ariadne is described as delivering solid, detailed, and precise sound with excellent bass control and extension, though some reviewers note it may sound slightly clinical compared to warmer high-end competitors. The turntable requires an external air compressor system for operation, making setup more complex than conventional designs. Despite its unconventional appearance and setup requirements, the Ariadne is regarded as offering exceptional performance value relative to its price point.
