About the Medallion II with PM2A drivers
The Lowther Medallion II loudspeakers are large rear-loaded horn cabinets measuring 45"H x 14"W x 20.5"D, designed by Jennifer Crock of JENA Labs specifically for the Lowther Club of America. They use the PM2A full-range drivers, which are 8" diameter, 8 ohm or 15 ohm impedance, highly efficient (around 103-106 dB), and known for their natural, dynamic sound with a single driver source and no crossover. The bass frequencies are horn-loaded from the back of the driver, while midrange and highs come from the front, providing coherent timing and a unique sound signature. The PM2A drivers feature a twin paper cone made from a special wood and lacquer recipe, requiring a long break-in period for optimal sound. The Medallion II speakers are highly sensitive and can be driven with very low power amplifiers. They are recommended to be placed near walls or corners for better bass response, which extends smoothly down to about 60 Hz. The speakers come with black fabric grille cloths primarily for dust protection, but sound is best with grilles removed. The PM2A drivers have a resonance frequency of 45 Hz, sensitivity of about 97.6 dB, power handling of 100 W (program power 200 W), and a maximum linear excursion of ±1 mm. The magnet is an Alcomax 3 alnico type with a flux density of 2.1 Tesla. The Medallion II is considered a unique and musical speaker with a legacy of craftsmanship and a distinctive sound character appreciated by audiophiles.
