The Life-Changer Audio icOn 4U is a passive preamplifier that uses magnetic autoformers for volume attenuation, ensuring sonic transparency without adding or subtracting from the sound. It features 68 volume steps with 58 steps at 1 dB and 9 steps at 2 dB increments, allowing seamless level changes and precise channel balance adjustment in 1 dB steps. Unlike resistive passive preamps, it overcomes impedance mismatching between source and power amplifier, preserving sound quality. The volume control uses state-of-the-art analog FET switches controlled by a microprocessor, enabling remote control via an Apple Remote and manual control through an optical encoder and touch sensor on the faceplate. The unit supports balanced and unbalanced inputs and outputs, has a sleep mode, mute function, and a 7-segment LED display for status information. The enclosure is made of brushed aluminum with rubber feet, designed for high functionality and durability rather than luxury aesthetics.
