About the Stereo 20
Introduced in 1958 by H.J. Leak & Co. Ltd, the Stereo 20 is a highly regarded valve amplifier known for its musical warmth and clarity. It features four EL84 output valves, three ECC83 preamp valves, and a GZ34 rectifier tube. The amplifier delivers 10 watts per channel and is noted for its lucid midrange and soft bass, characteristic of vintage tube sound. It uses a single GZ34 rectifier with resistor/capacitor smoothing and includes a safety resistor that disconnects under overload to protect the power supply. The Stereo 20 was one of the ten best amplifiers of the 1950s, praised for its musical heart and ability to reveal instrumental and vocal details. Dimensions are approximately 27 x 33 x 18 cm, and it weighs about 10 kg. It originally came in champagne gold and later dark grey finishes. The amplifier is designed for 110V operation and pairs well with Leak preamplifiers or other suitable sources. It remains popular among collectors and audiophiles for its vintage sound and build quality.
