About the KPE

The Krell KPE Reference is a high-end phono preamplifier optimized exclusively for moving coil cartridges. It offers a wide range of gain settings from 58 to 76 dB in 6 dB increments and eight selectable input impedance loadings from 10 to 1000 Ohms, allowing precise matching to various MC cartridges. The unit features a hybrid composite amplifier design with class-A biasing, direct-coupled and complementary circuitry, and mu-metal shielding to minimize noise and interference. It delivers a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz with +/-0.1 dB accuracy and an excellent signal-to-noise ratio of -80 dB (A-weighted, 0.5 mV input). The KPE Reference is available as a standalone unit with an external power supply or as a plug-in board for compatible Krell preamplifiers. It is praised for its dynamic range, clarity, and detailed sound reproduction, making it a contender for state-of-the-art phono stages.
