About the KBL

The Krell KBL is a high-end, solid-state, class-A, DC-coupled line-level stereo preamplifier introduced around 1990. It features a fully discrete, double-regulated external power supply with two 50VA transformers. The circuitry is fully complementary and discrete for both positive and negative waveform portions, with individual tracking regulators for line-stage rails to maintain low rail-voltage offsets. Each output section acts as a small class-A power amplifier capable of swinging 65V peak-to-peak. It offers six inputs, including two balanced XLR inputs, two buffered tape loops, and two sets of outputs (balanced and single-ended). The front panel includes input selector, tape monitor selector, symmetry (balance) control, and volume knobs, plus switches for gain selection (3dB or 9dB) and absolute polarity reversal. The KBL can be configured for dual-mono operation by pairing two units. It is praised for its neutrality, dynamic range, and transparency, often compared favorably to tube preamps but without tube noise.
