About the Cello
The King Cello tape and phono preamplifier is a high-end external unit designed for audiophiles and professionals seeking superior tape playback and phono stage performance. It uses the same design as the Cello Audio Suite's P603 tape preamp module and supports both IEC and NAB equalization standards. It features three gain settings and can be used either as a tape preamp or a phono stage, offering incredible transparency and revealing sound quality. The unit is optimized for tape heads with inductance in the 150-300mH range, compatible with many professional tape decks such as Technics RS1500, Otari MX series, Tascam models, Studer A820/A810, and Ampex ATR-102. A rare VU meter module option was introduced toward the end of production, enhancing its functionality. The King Cello is highly regarded for its value compared to other tape stages costing up to and it is also praised for its excellent phono stage capabilities. Modifications and upgrades, including added meters, pots for adjustment, and improved connectors, have been made by the original builder Charles King to enhance flexibility and performance. The preamp is noted for its very low noise, excellent resolution, and ability to work well with various tape heads and reproducers.
