The JVC HR-S5901U is a Super VHS (S-VHS) Hi-Fi stereo video cassette recorder (VCR) designed for high-resolution recording and playback, not an audio-only cassette deck. It supports both S-VHS and VHS formats and features Super VHS ET technology that allows recording with S-VHS-level picture quality onto standard VHS cassettes, providing high-resolution Super VHS recording (up to about 400-line horizontal resolution) compared with conventional VHS resolution around 230 lines. For editing and recording control, the HR-S5901U includes a flying erase head for clean, glitch-free in-camera edits, along with audio dubbing and insert editing functions. Tracking can be adjusted automatically or manually, and the unit offers jog/shuttle and slow-motion functions for precise cueing and review. Audio is handled by Hi-Fi VHS stereo with an MTS (Multichannel Television Sound) decoder, enabling high-fidelity stereo sound from broadcast sources and recordings. Connectivity includes a front-panel S-Video input plus gold-plated RCA composite video and stereo audio inputs, intended for easy connection to camcorders and other AV sources; the rear panel offers S-Video input/output, RF input/output, RCA video/stereo audio input/output, and a cable box/mouse controller input. Convenience features include Plug & Play automatic setup, VCR Plus+ timer recording (with Cable Eye cable box controller support), and a full-function multi-brand remote control.
