About the Defy-7

The Jadis Defy-7 is a two-stroke tube amplifier operating in class A/B, featuring a combination of traditional vacuum tube technology with some modern design elements, though no solid-state devices are in the signal path. It delivers 100 watts per channel into 8 or 4 ohms with very low distortion (0.6% THD+N at 1 kHz) and a wide frequency response from 15 Hz to 100 kHz (-3 dB). The amplifier uses 12 output tubes (6550 beam tetrodes) arranged in parallel pairs, along with ECC82 and ECC83 tubes in the input and driver stages. It is noted for its authoritative power delivery without strain or tonal imbalance, excellent low-level detail, natural rhythm, and a spacious, open soundstage with excellent stereo focus. The Defy-7 weighs about 45 kg, measures approximately 510 x 485 x 200 mm, and consumes around 440 watts of power. It supports various output tubes including KT88, EL34, 6550, 6CA7, and KT90, allowing some customization of sound character. The amplifier is handmade in France and is highly regarded for its musicality, transparency, and dynamic expression, often described as having a rich yet natural sound without the hardness or compression typical of some solid-state amplifiers.
