About the PS3 MkII

The Icon Audio PS3 MkII is a no-compromise pure valve phono pre-amplifier designed for Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) cartridges. It features a large, oversized power transformer, a valve rectifier (EZ80), and two large chokes for ultra-smooth power supply, regulated by an EL84 valve controlled by a 12AX7 for accurate and stable voltage. The preamp uses a unique double cascode circuit with four ECC88 valves for high gain and low noise, delivering excellent detail and sound staging with vivid color and warmth. The output stage uses the renowned 6SN7 valve, known for its luxurious sound quality. It includes two inputs (one MM and one MC/MM), hand-wound moving coil transformers, and an internal ALPS volume control enabling direct coupling to many power amplifiers. The PS3 MkII offers a massive output headroom of up to 40 volts before clipping, a signal-to-noise ratio of 88dB for MM, and a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz within ±0.5dB without feedback in the RIAA stage. It is hand-wired point-to-point with no printed circuit boards to preserve sound purity and is easy to service and upgrade. The unit is highly regarded for its spacious, warm, and detailed sound, making it one of the finest phono stages available.
