The Truth preamplifier by Hornshoppe is an active line stage that uses photo cells (light-dependent resistors) to control volume and balance without any potentiometers or resistors in the signal path, resulting in a very transparent sound. It provides unity gain (0 dB) and only attenuates the signal, meaning it cannot amplify. The design includes input and output buffers to optimize impedance matching, allowing it to drive long cables and various amplifier loads effectively. The balance control is independent and does not shift with volume changes. It has a very high input impedance and a low output impedance of a few ohms. The unit is built with a black aluminum enclosure and offers options for OCC copper or silver internal wiring. It includes built-in AC mains power and optional remote control with motorized potentiometer. The Truth has been in production since 2010 and is known for its minimal electronic character, often described as sounding like a direct connection to the source. It is The preamp requires the system to have sufficient gain elsewhere since it does not amplify the signal itself. It is recommended to leave the unit on continuously for optimal performance, with a warm-up period of about 72 hours. The design is considered unique and has no direct equivalents on the market.
