HD12
HegelAbout the HD12
The Hegel HD12 is a solid-state high-resolution PCM and DSD-capable digital-to-analog converter and preamplifier designed to upgrade any audio system to high-end standards. It supports digital inputs including one coaxial, two optical (Toslink), and one asynchronous USB 2.0 input, all capable of handling up to 24-bit/192kHz PCM and native DSD64 (2.8224MHz) playback. The DAC uses a 32-bit DAC IC with a linear phase analog filter, delivering an output signal level of 2.5V RMS at 0dBFS. It features both balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog outputs, as well as a high-quality headphone output capable of driving demanding headphones. The HD12 includes a built-in, remote-controlled digital volume control with 100 steps, allowing it to function as a preamplifier and connect directly to power amplifiers or active speakers. It has an exceptionally low noise floor of -145dB and distortion typically less than 0.0005%, contributing to a very quiet and precise soundstage with reduced jitter and distortion artifacts such as 'skirting.' The unit is housed in a compact black chassis measuring 6cm x 21cm x 26cm (2.35" x 8.3" x 10.24") and weighs 3.5kg (6.6 lbs). Power is supplied by an internal toroidal transformer with 20,000μF capacitance. The HD12 is praised for its musical engagement, smooth broadband presentation, and excellent headphone amplification. It includes a remote control for input selection and volume adjustment, though it lacks front panel input buttons. The product is no longer in current production but remains a notable DAC in Hegel's lineup.
