About the W-4M
The Heathkit W-4M is a vintage Williamson-type Hi-Fi tube amplifier rated at approximately 20 watts RMS output, though actual output is closer to 17 watts RMS. It is based on the earlier W-3M model but uses a lower cost Chicago Standard output transformer to reduce manufacturing costs. The amplifier features a push-pull design with vacuum tubes and was finished in a gray hammertone metallic case in its early versions. It was designed for high-fidelity audio reproduction and is part of Heathkit's line of tube amplifiers popular among audiophiles. The W-4M was succeeded by the W-4AM model, which incorporated stability improvements and combined power supply and amplifier in a single chassis. The W-4M is known for its classic tube sound but has been criticized for some design limitations related to the output transformer and stability at certain frequencies.
