About the PSU
Garrard PSUs (Power Supply Units) are specialized power supplies designed to drive Garrard turntable motors, such as those in the Garrard 301 and 401 models. These PSUs allow adjustable voltage output typically ranging from about 170V to 240V, with Garrard turntables running quietest at voltages between 190V and 210V. The frequency can also be adjusted to optimize motor speed and reduce motor vibrations and noise, which in turn improves the sonic performance of the turntable. Modifications and upgrades to Garrard PSUs often include stabilization of voltage and frequency, use of low temperature drift components, and sometimes external power supplies like the Hanze HiFi HAT PSU, which can significantly enhance musicality by reducing AC noise and motor vibration. Garrard PSU designs may include features such as cosine state variable filters and recalculated component replacements for maximum stabilization. Users have reported that optimized PSU settings can reveal more detail and musical nuance from phonograph cartridges than simply upgrading cartridges alone.
