About the DV40 DVD Master Recorder
The Fostex DV-40 is a professional DVD-RAM master recorder designed for broadcast, post-production, and mastering applications. It supports recording in mono, stereo, or 4-track modes at sampling rates up to 192 kHz and 24-bit resolution. The unit records audio in industry-standard Broadcast Wave File (BWF) or Sound Designer II (SDII) formats, with files stored on DVD-RAM media using the Universal Disc Format (UDF) for compatibility with Mac and PC workstations. It offers two recording modes: Normal non-destructive and Tape destructive mode, which secures data against power loss. The DV-40 features comprehensive I/O including balanced XLR and 1/4" phone jacks for analog audio, AES/EBU digital I/O, Word and Video sync, PS/2 keyboard/mouse ports, and 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet for network file transfer via FTP. It includes a full suite of on-board editing functions such as copy, paste, insert, cut, and erase with high precision scrubbing via a jog/shuttle dial. Timecode generation supports multiple modes including 24H RUN, REC RUN, FREE RUN, EXT RUN, and 23.97F HD camera mode. The device is rackmountable, weighs approximately 7.4 kg, and consumes 50 W of power. It is highly regarded for its reliability, error correction, and suitability as a successor to Digital Audio Tape (DAT) in professional environments.
