About the SMP-2

The Forssell SMP-2 is a high-quality, two-channel microphone preamplifier housed in a 1U rack mount chassis. It features a Class A discrete JFET front-end design with a gain range of +6 to +68 dB in 24 stepped increments. Each channel provides two inputs: one with +48 V phantom power and high-quality capacitors to block DC voltage, and a direct coupled input for microphones that do not require phantom power, such as ribbon or dynamic mics. Front panel controls include mute switch, polarity reverse relay, phantom power switch, and a 24-position rotary gain control. Signal level is indicated by dual-color LEDs (green at -5 dBu and red at +22 dBu, just before clipping). The signal path is fully DC coupled except for the phantom powered inputs. The preamp uses high-quality Neutrik XLR connectors with gold-plated pins. It is praised for its transparent, uncolored sound with exceptional detail capture and clarity, making it suitable for demanding professional recording applications.
