About the Elmaformer

The EMIA Elmaformer is a stereo passive line-level volume control designed by EMIA and based on two inductive, multi-tapped autoformers—one per channel. Rather than dissipating unused signal energy in resistors, it provides volume adjustment through transformer tapping. A front-panel Elma rotary switch selects among 47 positions, with 1.25 dB increments and a total range from -51.25 dB to +5 dB. The unit includes three selectable inputs and two parallel outputs. The autoformer cores use 80% nickel Permalloy, with non-magnetic brass channel frames. It is offered in copper- or silver-finished versions, and balanced operation is available on request. The manufacturer’s published documentation does not provide complete electrical performance figures such as frequency response, input/output impedance, maximum signal level, THD, or noise.
