About the Dolby Model 363
The Dolby Model 363 is a professional two-channel noise reduction processor that supports both Dolby Spectral Recording (SR) and Dolby A-type noise reduction systems. It is designed for use in music recording, postproduction, broadcast, multimedia, and film applications. The unit provides switchable noise reduction modes per channel, allowing it to serve as both encoder and decoder for stereo recording. It features a setup button and four-element LED calibration displays for quick alignment using internally generated Dolby tones or noise. The 363 is equipped with balanced XLR analog inputs and outputs, remote control ports for record/playback changeover, and supports precise level adjustments for accurate matching of line levels. Dolby SR improves dynamic range by up to 24 dB, significantly reducing tape hiss, modulation noise, print-through, and crosstalk, while Dolby A-type offers about 10 dB noise reduction. The unit is compact, robust, and suitable for tape delay machines, archiving, tape copying, and mastering. It is normally supplied with two Cat 300 modules containing both Dolby SR and A-type processing, with options for Cat 350 SR-only modules. The 363 offers a dynamic range of 105 dB, total harmonic distortion of 0.2%, and dimensions of 483 x 44 x 285 mm, weighing 6.3 kg. It supports remote control functions and features fast changeover times (3 ms max). The unit is highly regarded for its transparency and reliability in professional analog audio workflows.
