About the Dennis Had SE KT-150 Hotrod
The Dennis Had SE KT-150 Hotrod is a single-ended pentode stereo tube amplifier designed by Dennis Had, founder of CARY Audio. It uses KT-150 output tubes (also compatible with KT-88, KT-120, and 6V6 tubes) and a 5AR4 or GZ34 rectifier tube. The amplifier delivers between 10 to 17 watts per channel depending on the tubes used, with 12 watts per channel typical output with KT-150 tubes. It features a fully regulated low impedance tube screen grid B+ power supply, large oil-filled regulated power supply filter capacitors, filter choke Pi-network power supply, precision non-inductive metal film resistors, and paper and oil-filled epoxy encapsulated coupling and bypass capacitors. The output transformers are custom-designed 15 watt single-ended air-gapped types with separate feedback windings, matched for left and right channels. The chassis is made of .080 aluminum with a Harley Davidson gloss black powder coat finish and weighs approximately 14 pounds. The amplifier is known for deep, controlled bass and a large soundstage despite its relatively low power output. It supports a wide selection of tubes and is appreciated for its sonic qualities especially when using KT-150 tubes, although some users note that KT-150 tubes may not add value in smaller footprint amps. The amp is designed for continuous 24/7 operation and includes gold-plated copper speaker posts and high-quality internal wiring with 99.9% silver Teflon insulated coax interconnects. It is a high-end boutique amplifier with a focus on sound quality and build quality rather than high power output.
