About the SA220
The Counterpoint SA-220 is a high-end hybrid stereo power amplifier from the early 1990s, combining tube input/driver stages with solid-state MOSFET output stages. It uses 6DJ8 triodes for voltage amplification and driver, with a constant current source cathode follower for low distortion. The output stage employs eight 125W MOSFETs per channel with high bias for extended Class A operation, outside the NFB loop to preserve natural timbre and dynamics. It supports bridged mono operation and features advanced protection circuitry (APC). Original Counterpoint is no longer in business, making these vintage units collectible but potentially requiring maintenance like capacitor replacement or tube rolling.
