About the GAT
The Conrad Johnson GAT preamplifier features a single amplifier stage using a composite triode made from paralleled sections of a high-transconductance miniature dual triode vacuum tube (2 x 6922 tubes). It includes a high-current MOSFET buffer for very low output impedance (under 100 ohms), allowing flexibility in interconnect cables and amplifiers. The design minimizes infrasonic noise by operating tube filaments on DC voltage supplied by discrete regulated power supplies. The unit uses microprocessor-controlled relays located near input connectors to minimize crosstalk and includes a suspension system to reduce microphonics. The chassis features clear Lucite tube guards for easy tube replacement. The GAT delivers a gain of 25 dB, maximum output of 20 VRMS, distortion less than 0.15% THD, and a frequency response from 2 Hz to over 100 kHz. It has a very low noise floor (100 dB below 1.0 V). The preamplifier inverts absolute polarity and is hand-assembled with a 3-year limited warranty (excluding tubes). It weighs 35 lbs and measures 19" W x 4.81" H x 15.375" D. The GAT is highly regarded for its natural tonality, transparency, and ability to extract musical details holistically, making it a top-tier choice for audiophiles seeking a tube preamplifier with minimalist design and exceptional sound quality. It is no longer in production but remains a benchmark in high-end audio preamplifiers.
