The Cambridge Audio Azur 640R is a robust 7.1-channel AV receiver from the mid-2000s designed for high-quality multi-channel surround sound performance. It delivers 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms when two channels are driven, and 100 watts per channel when all seven channels are driven. It supports full surround sound decoding including Dolby Digital and DTS in 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1 configurations, as well as Dolby Pro Logic II/IIx and DTS Neo:6 for matrix-encoded stereo sources. The unit features HDMI switching with three assignable HDMI inputs and one HDMI output, alongside composite, S-video, and component video inputs and outputs with transcoding capabilities (composite to S-video to component). It is HDTV compatible and includes multi-room outputs compatible with Cambridge's Incognito and A-BUS systems. The receiver has a sturdy aluminum faceplate, a blue-tinted vacuum fluorescent display, and a full-function remote control. It includes a large toroidal transformer and an advanced heat dissipation system with a near-silent fan. Audio specifications include a frequency response of 10Hz to 20kHz, total harmonic distortion under 0.006%, and a signal-to-noise ratio over 90dB. The unit weighs 15 kg and measures 150 x 425 x 420 mm. It lacks HDMI upconversion and room EQ but is praised for its sound quality, power output, and build quality. The 640R is no longer in production but remains a powerful and flexible receiver for home theater and music applications.
