About the Alpha
The California Audio Labs Alpha DAC is a classic high-fidelity digital-to-analog converter originally released in the mid-1990s and later upgraded to support 24-bit/96kHz audio. It uses a Burr-Brown 1728 enhanced multi-level Delta Sigma DAC design and includes eight separately regulated power supplies with one-Farad battery capacitors for ultimate stability. The analog output stage employs dual 12AX7 tubes operating in dual triode mode, DC coupled for true-to-life bass response, with tubes servo controlled for accurate signal voltage tracking. The Alpha DAC supports multiple digital inputs including coaxial 75-ohm RCA, balanced 110-ohm XLR, AT&T glass, and TosLink optical. It outputs 2.0V rms with less than 0.005% THD and has a frequency response of 5Hz to 40kHz (+/- 1dB). The unit measures 8.5"W x 4.75"H x 12.5"D and weighs about 10 pounds. It is known for its smooth, warm, and analog-like sound quality, with excellent tonal balance, staging, and detail. The Alpha DAC features a special standby mode that reduces tube filament voltage to extend tube life, which is expected to exceed three years of continuous use. It is highly regarded for its musicality and ability to render a "you are there" presence, making it a sought-after piece for audiophiles who appreciate tube sound in digital playback. The unit is no longer manufactured but remains a classic in the audiophile community.
