About the MAT-1
The Boston Audio Design MAT-1 is a high-end turntable mat crafted from a large pillar of pure carbon graphite, CNC machined to tight tolerances (+/- 0.005 inches) and polished at over 4000 rpm. It is approximately 3mm thick and weighs about 12oz (340g), with a diameter of 295mm. The mat features a sculpted label area to allow intimate contact between the vinyl record and the mat, enhancing vibration absorption and resonance dissipation. The carbon graphite material effectively absorbs and disperses stray energy and vibration that can degrade analog playback, resulting in a sound that is acutely focused yet neutral, with a lowered noise floor and improved dynamic range. The mat is finished with four very thin coats of a proprietary sealant to maintain acoustic properties and durability. It is heavier than typical felt or rubber mats, which helps prevent it from lifting with the record. Users report significant improvements in focus, reduced surface noise, and enhanced tonal clarity when using the MAT-1 compared to stock or felt mats. The MAT-1 is considered a benchmark in carbon graphite mats and has been succeeded by the thicker MAT-2, but remains highly regarded for its sonic benefits.
