About the Alpha
The Berkeley Audio Design Alpha DAC is a high-end digital-to-analog converter that features advanced circuitry and proprietary technologies. It supports input sampling rates from 32 kHz to 192 kHz and has a 24-bit input word length. The device includes AES/EBU, SPDIF (on BNC), and TosLink inputs, with balanced and unbalanced outputs available. It is designed to act as a preamplifier, allowing volume control and source switching directly to a power amplifier. The Alpha DAC employs Analog Devices DACs followed by op-amp output stages, chosen for their technical and sonic performance. It also includes a large alphanumeric display showing the input sampling rate and other functions. The device is meticulously hand-tuned and features advanced digital filters developed by Michael 'Pflash' Pflaumer, a co-founder of Pacific Microsonics.
