About the VK-5i
The Balanced Audio Technology VK-5i is an all-tube, fully balanced stereo preamplifier designed with a dual mono architecture, featuring virtually two sets of everything including two toroidal transformers to minimize interference and maximize channel separation. It uses only balanced XLR inputs and outputs, requiring compatible system components. The VK-5i boasts a wide frequency response from 2 Hz to 300 kHz, very low total harmonic distortion of 0.01%, and a gain of 18 dB. It has a high signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB and can deliver up to 50 V output at the pre-out maximum. The preamplifier is equipped with a large power supply with 190 Joules of energy storage (95 Joules per channel), enabling it to drive power amplifiers with input impedances as low as 100 Ohms without distortion. The input impedance is 100 kOhms per phase, and the output impedance is about 1 kOhm. The VK-5i includes a sophisticated remote control allowing volume adjustments in 0.5 dB increments, mute, fade, and a unity gain mode for home theater integration. It weighs approximately 14 kg and measures 480 x 150 x 400 mm. The design emphasizes minimal negative feedback and careful component placement to reduce magnetic interference, resulting in improved transparency, detail, bass quality, and soundstage compared to its predecessor, the VK-5. The VK-5i is highly regarded for its lush, warm tube sound and is considered a reference-level preamplifier in high-end audio systems.
