About the Optik Phono 1.1

The Backert Labs Optik Phono 1.1 is a specialized, tube-based optical-cartridge equalizer designed exclusively for DS Audio optical phono cartridges. It is not a conventional MM/MC phono preamplifier and does not provide standard RIAA cartridge inputs. Its distinctive feature is support for two independent tonearms or DS Audio cartridges, selectable from the front panel; the inactive cartridge is automatically deactivated to reduce wear on its light source and circuitry. The unit uses a pure Class A, no-feedback proprietary gain stage, automatic tube biasing, dual-mono power supplies for the audio signal, and a separate supply for the DS Audio photo-detector. It is hand-built in the United States and provides both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA outputs. Current manufacturer information presents the Optik Phono 1.1 as an active product, with availability beginning in January 2026; therefore it is not considered discontinued.
