The Audio Research SP-8 mkii is a stereo preamplifier originally produced in the 1980s, featuring an all-tube analog design with a built-in phono stage suitable for turntables. It is highly regarded for its neutral, high-definition sound and classic tube warmth. The SP-8 mkii includes multiple inputs such as magnetic phono and high-level inputs, with overload-proof capability. It has a stepped volume control with precise attenuation steps, a balance control, and mode switches for stereo, mono, reverse, left, and right channel selection. The unit also features a mute function that completely silences the output, and a monitor switch for tape monitoring. The chassis dimensions are 19" (48 cm) wide, 5¼" (13.4 cm) high, and 10¼" (26 cm) deep, weighing approximately 22 lbs (10 kg) net. It uses a combination of vacuum tubes including 12AX7, 6922, 12AT7, and 12BH7 tubes in the mkii version. The power supply is electronically regulated with both tube and solid-state elements, ensuring stable operation.
