The Audio Research SP-17 is a completely single-ended vacuum tube preamplifier designed for audiophiles seeking exceptional sound quality. It includes five sets of inputs labeled Phono, CD, Tuner, Video, and Aux, along with a Processor (unity-gain) pass-through. The preamplifier uses low-noise JFET inputs in both the line and phono stages and employs 6H30 tubes instead of the traditional 12AX7, offering high performance and long life. It features a high-voltage regulator and a 103-step volume control for finer volume adjustments, especially at low levels. The SP-17 delivers improved bandwidth (-3dB points below 0.3Hz to above 120kHz), lower output impedance for better cable driving, and increased gain in the phono section. It is notably quieter than its predecessor, with an overall noise reduction of 11dB, enabling the use of low-output phono cartridges without noise issues.
