The PH-5 is a standalone phono stage that replaces the PH3 and PH3-SE, offering improved gain and a new RIAA equalization circuit inspired by Audio Research's flagship Reference Phono. It features a hybrid design: the input stage uses a low-noise, high-gain, 5-JFET per channel, non-inverting circuit with constant-current stabilization and no overall feedback, while the RIAA equalization and output stages employ four Electro-Harmonix 6922EH (ECC88) dual triode tubes. The PH-5 is praised for its smooth, detailed sound, with a particularly strong bass performance and crystal-clear treble. It is compatible with a wide range of cartridges, though its gain (57.5dB) may require additional line stage amplification for very low-output moving coil cartridges. The unit is controlled via front panel or remote, with no internal switches or jumpers. Load impedance is adjustable, but the effect is subtle with most cartridges. The PH-5 is exceptionally quiet, with a very low noise floor, and is built to Audio Research's high standards, though some users note its relatively light weight.
