The Audio Research CD5 is a top-loading compact disc player designed for high-resolution playback of Red Book CDs, CD-R/RW, and the CD layer of hybrid SACDs. It features a rigid Philips PRO2M laser transport mounted on a machined aluminum I-beam with proprietary damping to minimize mechanical jitter. The CD5 uses a new Burr-Brown PCM1792 24-bit DAC with fully balanced circuitry and an all-new FET direct-coupled analog output stage powered by beefy regulated supplies, resulting in improved channel separation (120 dB), signal-to-noise ratio (114 dB), and reduced distortion compared to its predecessor. It offers balanced XLR and single-ended RCA analog outputs, as well as AES/EBU XLR and coax/BNC digital outputs, allowing use as a transport. The player is noted for its large, dimensional soundstage, airy top end without dryness, precise bass control, and overall transparency and purity, delivering a relaxed yet detailed musical experience.
