The Audio Note UK DAC-3 Signature is a tube-based digital-to-analog converter designed with a philosophy that prioritizes sonic performance over technical specifications. It features no oversampling, no jitter reduction, no noise shaping, and no re-clocking, allowing the digital-to-analog conversion to occur without any digital manipulation. Instead, the data stream is reformatted for the converter chip to interpolate the incoming information correctly. All filtering is performed in the analog domain, which helps retain wideband phase-frequency and dynamic coherence. The DAC uses the highest grade Analogue Devices AD1865 18-bit stereo converter chip, chosen for its superior sound quality. It includes valve rectification and a valve complement typically consisting of 2 x ECC82 / 5814a, 1 x ECL82, and 1 x 6X5 tubes. The output stage uses custom-designed transformers and coils manufactured in-house by Audio Note, contributing to its distinctive sound. The unit weighs approximately 15 kg and measures 145mm (height) x 450mm (width) x 425mm (depth). This DAC is highly regarded for its natural tonality, dynamic control, and ability to deliver music as a continuous time domain experience without digital artifacts. It has been upgraded in some versions with Blackgate electrolytic capacitors, Audio Note copper foil output capacitors, silver RCA jacks, and NOS Telefunken tubes for enhanced performance. The product is no longer widely available new but remains sought after in the audiophile community.
