About the Modulus 2
The Audible Illusions Modulus 2 is a stereo tube preamplifier introduced in the 1980s, designed with a simple circuit using four 6DJ8/ECC88 tubes—two for the line stage and two for the built-in phono section. It features dual volume controls and a minimalist design philosophy aimed at minimizing circuitry to enhance sound quality. The Modulus 2D, the last version of this model produced between 1988 and 1991, was highly regarded for its transparent, detailed sound with very good bass definition and imaging. It was a competitive alternative to more expensive preamps of its time, offering excellent performance without fancy features like stepped attenuators or remote control. The unit is known for its clear and open sound, good bass extension, and detailed harmonic contrasts, making it a budget legend in audiophile circles. Many units remain in use today, often upgraded with premium tubes and capacitors for improved performance.
