About the SCM20SL
The ATC SCM20SL is a relatively compact stand-mount loudspeaker designed for high fidelity audio performance in modestly sized rooms. It employs two handmade drive units in a sealed enclosure with a deep-and-narrow form factor, making it visually less imposing yet solid and purposeful. The speaker weighs approximately 23 kg each. The mid-bass driver is a 6-inch (150mm) unit with a large 3-inch (75mm) voice coil and ATC's proprietary Super Linear (SL) motor technology, which significantly reduces odd-harmonic distortion, especially in the lower midrange. The tweeter is a 1-inch (25mm) soft-dome with dual suspension and a powerful 2.1 tesla motor. The crossover is a 2nd order design using oversized air-core inductors and high voltage polypropylene film capacitors for minimal loss and high reliability. The sealed cabinet design ensures excellent timing and low frequency output below the cut-off, allowing placement close to walls without excessive bass boom. The cabinet is heavy and inert, with bitumastic damping panels to minimize coloration, and is available in various hand-selected veneers and finishes including satin black/white paint and high gloss polyester. The SCM20SL delivers a maximum continuous SPL of 108 dB at 1 meter, has a nominal impedance of 8 ohms (minimum 5.5 ohms), and is recommended to be paired with amplifiers rated between 75 to 300 watts. Its crossover frequency is around 2.5 to 2.8 kHz. The speaker is praised for its consistent frequency response across the spectrum, clean and extended bass and treble, and absence of port noise due to its sealed design, making it a standout choice for critical listening environments.
