About the ATR-102 Reel
The Ampex ATR-102, introduced in 1976, is a top-of-the-line reel-to-reel tape deck that has been widely used in mastering studios. It features a servo-controlled transport system, eliminating the need for a pinch roller, which significantly reduces wow and flutter, providing a low noise floor and high fidelity. The deck supports multiple tape speeds (3.75, 7.5, 15, and 30 inches per second) and can accommodate different tape widths by changing the head block and guides. It is highly customizable, with easy access to internal electronics for modifications.
