The Altec Lansing A7 Magnificent is a home-oriented version of the Voice of the Theatre A7 system, built into hand-finished walnut floorstanding cabinets that house the classic A7 horn-loaded bass-reflex enclosure and sectoral high-frequency horn. It is typically configured with 416A 15-inch woofers, 802D compression drivers, 511B horns, and N500E (or closely related N500-series) passive crossovers, a combination widely associated with later A7-500 variants and with Magnificent walnut systems released for domestic use. These speakers deliver the high efficiency, dynamic scale, and wide sound dispersion of the A7 theatre systems, but in furniture-grade cabinetry prized by collectors. Their sound is generally characterized by a spacious soundstage, very lively dynamics, and a warm, present midrange; bass extension depends strongly on room placement and the horn-loaded/reflex cabinet design, so low-bass output can be modest compared with modern large sealed or vented hi-fi tower speakers. As vintage, professional-heritage loudspeakers, they are often used with low-power tube amplifiers and valued as much for their historical significance and visual impact as for their distinctive horn-loaded sound.
