About the Sonata
The Alphason Sonata turntable, introduced in 1986, is renowned for its advanced suspended design that uses a drop-cast pig-iron chassis hanging from long, adjustable, damped springs in three suspension turrets to provide exceptional isolation and self-stabilisation. It features a one-piece bespoke cast resin platter driven by twin motors, representing significant innovation in turntable design. The Sonata is highly regarded for its tonal neutrality, clarity, and stunning bass response with fast transients and excellent dynamics. It is often paired with the Alphason HR100S or HR100MCS tonearms, which are known for their tonal neutrality and precision engineering. The turntable supports 33 and 45 rpm speeds with switchable selectors and includes a high torque synchronous motor with belt drive. Its build quality is robust and heavy, contributing to its stability and sound performance. The Sonata was available in finishes such as graphite metallic or rosewood/black deluxe. It remains a sought-after classic in the audiophile community for its sound quality and engineering excellence.
