About the GX77 Tape Recorder
The Akai GX-77 is a premium 4-track, 2-channel stereo reel to reel tape recorder designed for both conventional and EE (Extra Efficiency) chrome-type tapes. It features auto reverse operation and a 6-head system consisting of 2 GX recording heads, 2 GX playback heads, and 2 erase heads, enabling identical recording and playback characteristics in both directions. The machine supports tape speeds of 3¾ and 7½ inches per second (9.5 and 19 cm/s), with a frequency response up to 33 kHz at 7½ ips, and a signal-to-noise ratio better than 63 dB. It uses a 3-motor drive system: one FG servo DC motor for the capstan and two DC motors for reel drive. The GX-77 was awarded the Japanese Good Design award in 1982 and was Akai's last reel to reel model before cassette and later digital formats took over.
