About the GX-630D
The Akai GX-630D is a premium reel-to-reel tape deck produced between 1976 and 1979, designed for stereo recording and playback with a 4-track, 2-channel system. It features Akai's innovative GX heads made of crystal ferrite mounted in glass, which provide superior magnetic properties, a perfectly linear shallow head gap, and focused magnetic field for minimal high-frequency loss and wider dynamic range. The deck employs a three-motor drive system including a center pole generated AC servo motor for direct capstan drive and two eddy current outer rotor motors for reel drive, resulting in very low wow and flutter of 0.06% at 7½ ips tape speed. It supports tape speeds of 3¾ and 7½ ips and can accommodate reels up to 10.5 inches. The frequency response extends from 30 Hz to 25 kHz at 7½ ips, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 57 dB and total harmonic distortion of 0.5%. Inputs include line, DIN, and microphone levels, and outputs include line and DIN. The deck weighs approximately 19 kg and measures 465 x 440 x 240 mm. It is noted for excellent sound quality, durability, and long-lasting wear-free heads, making it a sought-after vintage analog tape recorder for audiophiles and professionals.
