About the 4000DS MKII
The Akai 4000DS MKII is a four-track, two-channel stereo reel-to-reel tape recorder designed for use with 7-inch reels. Manufactured in Japan between 1976 and 1978, it features a highly efficient single 4-pole induction motor and a boldly designed flywheel that ensures stable tape travel and reduced wow and flutter (0.15% at 7½ ips). The three-head system includes separate erase, record, and playback heads with a one-micron gap playback head for clear sound reproduction. It supports two tape speeds: 3¾ and 7½ inches per second, with a frequency response of 30 Hz to 23 kHz at 7½ ips and a signal-to-noise ratio of 50 dB. The unit offers a warm, rich analog sound with total harmonic distortion around 1.5% and crosstalk attenuation of 50 dB. Inputs include microphone, line, and DIN, with corresponding outputs for line and DIN connections. The deck is housed in a sturdy metal chassis with wooden side panels, weighing approximately 11.4 kg and measuring 406 x 314 x 194 mm. It was originally priced around 648 DM and remains a sought-after vintage audio device for audiophiles and collectors.
