About the ES1
The ES-1 was released around 1984 as a modernized turntable from Acoustic Research, featuring a dense MDF plinth replacing earlier open-frame designs. It uses a one-step belt drive system powered by a 24 pole synchronous motor running at 300 rpm, supporting 33⅓ and 45 rpm speeds. The platter weighs 1.8 kg (3.9 lb) and is mounted on a sapphire thrust bearing with a concave tip fitting over a loose ball bearing. The suspension is a damped 3-point sprung system, providing good isolation from vibrations. It has a wow and flutter rating of 0.04% and rumble of -78 dB (DIN standards). The turntable was available in cherry or walnut wood finishes and typically came with an OEM Japanese tonearm, though it was also sold without an arm for customization. The ES-1 weighs approximately 8.2 kg (18 lb) and consumes 9 watts of power. It is noted for its high torque motor and has been praised for its sound quality, though some users mention its suspension can feel bouncy. The design and suspension system have influenced other turntable manufacturers. The model is no longer in production but remains popular among vintage turntable enthusiasts.
