About Optonica (Sharp)
Optonica was a subdivision of the Japanese electronics manufacturer Sharp, created and launched in 1975 as a high-end hi-fi brand to compete with established audio giants like Sony, Pioneer, and Technics. Optonica produced a range of high-performance audio equipment, including receivers, amplifiers, tuners, cassette decks, turntables, and speakers. Signature models included the powerful SA-5151 receiver and the innovative RP-3636 direct drive turntable featuring Mikage granite stone construction for superior resonance control. Optonica is recognized among collectors and audiophiles for its robust build quality, distinctive silver faceplate design, and notable technical innovations, though it was phased out when home audio markets changed in the late 1980s.
