About Bell Sound Systems
Bell Sound Systems was a pioneering American audio electronics manufacturer based in Columbus, Ohio, active from 1932 to 1965. Founded by Floyd W. Bell, the company became known for its high-quality hi-fi components, amplifiers, and the development of the first commercially available reel-to-reel tape recorder in the 1930s. In addition to consumer audio products, Bell supplied public address equipment, intercoms (including for military use during WWII), and innovative home audio products such as PA systems, tuners, and record players. During the 1950s, Bell Sound Systems was renowned for its distinctive, space-age styled amplifiers and stereophonic components—many of which remain prized by audio collectors today. In 1953, it was acquired by Thompson Products (later TRW Inc.). Production of Bell-branded audio equipment ended around 1965.
